Pentosan Polysulfate

Pentosan polysulfate (PPS) is a medication that can be used to treat arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It can help to reduce pain and inflammation, improve joint mobility and function, and is considered safe with minimal side effects.

Pentosan polysulfate (PPS) is a medication that is used to treat arthritis and related conditions. PPS is a synthetic compound that is structurally similar to a component of the body's natural lubricating fluid, known as hyaluronan. This similarity allows PPS to be utilized in the treatment of arthritis, as it is thought to work by replenishing the body's natural lubricating fluid and reducing inflammation.

One of the primary benefits of PPS is its ability to reduce pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. PPS has been shown to be effective in the treatment of osteoarthritis, which is a degenerative joint disease that is characterized by the gradual loss of cartilage in the joints. PPS can help to reduce pain and inflammation by replenishing the body's natural lubricating fluid and reducing friction in the joints.

  1. Improves Cartilage Quality - Chondrocytes are stimulated to produce more proteoglycans to build and repair cartilage matrix

  2. Improves Joint Fluid Quality - Synovial fibroblasts are stimulated to produce increased amounts of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid resulting in more normally-viscous joint fluid for optimal lubrication and shock absorption

  3. Provides Anti-Inflammatory Activity - Inflammation is reduced via a powerful inhibitory effect on all mediators of the arachidonic acid cascade and lysosomal catabolic enzymes. Leukocyte migration into joints is also reduced.

  4. Inhibits Destructive Enzymes - The release of many degradative enzymes which damage cartilage and cause peri-articular inflammation are inhibited. In addition, the release of an enzyme that inhibits these degradative enzymes is stimulated.

  5. Increases Blood Supply to Joints - Strong fibrinolytic action promotes the dissolution of thrombi and fibrin deposits, and mobilization of lipids and cholesterol in synovial tissues and subchondral blood vessels.

PPS has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the joints and other parts of the body. PPS can help to reduce inflammation by inhibiting the activity of certain inflammatory enzymes.

Another benefit of PPS is that it can help to improve joint mobility and function. PPS can help to reduce stiffness and improve the range of motion in the joints, which can make it easier for patients to perform daily activities.

PPS is also considered a safe alternative to other arthritis treatments. Traditional arthritis treatments, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can have serious side effects such as stomach bleeding and kidney damage. PPS is considered to have a low risk of side effects, and is well tolerated by most patients.

It is important to note that PPS is not recommended for use in certain individuals, such as those with a history of bleeding disorders or those who are taking blood thinning medications. It is also not recommended for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women.
